RM of Prince Albert cuts reds tape for renters seeking burning permit

Dec 12, 2020 | 10:00 AM

A change to a Rural Municipality (RM) of Prince Albert bylaw, should help ease some stress for those people leasing a property.

The fire management bylaw amendment allows the renter to get a burning permit so long as the permission is written into the lease agreement they have with the property owner. If the renter wanted to get a permit in the past, they would be required to provide a permission letter from the landowner.

“It caused a lot of grief,” RM administrator Roxanne Roy told paNOW.

Roy provided one example where a man who rents from a lady, who is currently in a long term care home and does not have access to email or a fax machine.

“So to get permission from this landowner to turn around and burn, he would have to go to the home, she would have to fill it out, and he would have to come back here and it’s time wasted,” she said.

Reeve Eric Schmalz also commented for paNOW on the cumbersome process that existed prior.

“We have some ratepayers that do not reside in the province or in the city, or anywhere in the vicinity to come and be able to apply for a burning permit,” he said.

Both Roy and Schmalz cautioned however if something were to happen that the fire was to get out of control, the landowner would still be responsible for the damages.

RM renews fire agreement with City of Prince Albert

A new three-year agreement was signed between the RM and the City of Prince Albert Fire Dept.

One big change moving forward is that the fire department will now respond to all smoke alarms and CO alarms with a wellness check if the homeowner can’t be reached by the alarm company.
