The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) was encouraged by the government’s recognition of key rural issues outlined in yesterday’s Speech from the Throne.

SARM President Ray Orb said municipal leaders need to work together to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It will take a collaborative approach from all levels of government. We strongly encourage all residents to do their part in following provincial guidelines to help limit the spread, so we can focus on recovery,” he said.

Orb said he was pleased to hear about the government’s commitment to continue the fight against the federal carbon tax, supporting the agriculture industry through investments in research and innovation and the commitment to farm support programs.

Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) has started expansion of the Brandon, Man. fertilizer terminal.

FCL Associate Vice-President of Ag and Home Patrick Bergermann said storage capacity will increase by more than 30 per cent adding 9,000 metric tonnes of storage capacity to the existing structure.

Bergermann said the Brandon location warehouses, blends, and distributes nutrition products for Co-op locations and agricultural producers in Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan. The terminal also offers warehouse storage for liquid micronutrients and nitrogen stabilizers.

The expansion is expected to cost $5 million.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) announced its executive for the upcoming year.

Katie Ward of Woodlawn, Ont. returns as president with Julia Smith, of Merritt, B.C. acclaimed first vice-president and Stewart Wells of Swift Current, Sask. named second vice-president.

The women’s president is Bess Legault of Fort St. John, B.C. while Stuart Oke of Saint-Andre-Avellin, Que., was acclaimed as youth president.
