Man found with guns and knives avoids trial with guilty pleas

A 40-year-old man from the George Gordon First Nation in southern Saskatchewan is now awaiting sentencing in connection to a weapons bust in Prince Albert last February.

Kevin George Ackegan entered guilty pleas to a handful of gun-related charges. He was originally scheduled to face trial Monday at Prince Albert Provincial Court, but the lawyers involved were able to come to a resolution.

On Feb. 26, Ackegan was one of two people inside a vehicle pulled over by police in the 1700 block of 13th St. W.

Inside the vehicle police found two prohibited firearms (zip gun and British rifle), as well as ammunition, two cans of bear spray, a machete, a black and white bandana, and small bags containing various quantities of drugs. They also found Jamaican, American, and Canadian currency.

For his part, Ackegan originally faced 30 charges but only pleaded guilty to six (weapons-related), and the other charges were either amended or stayed. A sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place Feb. 2

The co-accused, a 33-year-old woman, was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Her matters are still before the courts.

According to statement from Police Chief Jon Bergen last month about 30 per cent of the individuals arrested and charged in Prince Albert are from outside the community.
