MELFORT, Sask. – The federal government has committed to providing compensation for the supply managed sector by this spring.

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said officials are putting together the last details before the second payment is made.

Last year the federal government offered the first installment of a $1.75 billion payout to dairy producers to cover market losses from negotiations of two trade deals last year.

Between December 2019 and January 2020, more than 10,000 dairy farmers received a cash payment of $345 million. The government has set a schedule to deliver the remaining $1.4 billion through direct payments to farmers over three years.

Bibeau said other supply-managed commodities and details would be announced before April 2021 for the poultry sector.

Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada and Canadian Hatching Egg Producers said they were pleased with the weekend announcement of $691 million for 10-year programs for Canada’s 4,800 chicken, egg, broiler hatching egg, and turkey farmers.

Program details will be established in consultation with sector representatives.

This is the final day to vote in the SaskCanola and Sask Pulse Growers director elections.

There are eight candidates seeking four seats on the SaskCanola board. They include David Altrogge of St. Benedict, Greg Brkich from Bladworth, Herschel’s Jonathan Fehr, Keith Fournier from Maidstone, Evan Michel from St. Gregor, Ogema’s Cody Nagy, Luke Perkins from Star City and Dean Roberts from Coleville.

Six candidates are vying for the three positions on the Sask Pulse Board of Directors. They are Bruce Elke of Jansen, Norm Hall of Wynyard, Corey Loessin of Radisson, Ryan Neubauer of Saskatoon, Winston Van Staveren of Creelman, and Terry Youzwa of Nipawin.
