Adventure Park at Little Red, live streaming of meetings top council agenda

Nov 30, 2020 | 8:00 AM

Prince Albert city council is set to discuss a proposal from a local service group that could see a major addition at Little Red River Park.

At Monday night’s meeting, councillors will hear from the Rotary Club of Prince Albert who want to partner with the City to build a new adventure park at Little Red. The project would be completed in phases and is estimated to ultimately cost over $1 million, according to council documents.

The facility would feature elements targeted at youth aged 8-14. Proposed attractions include a climbing center, a zipline, and a parkour-style circuit.

Other features for adults and toddlers like swings and paved walking trails would also be incorporated. The concept plans also include expanded picnic sites, new bathrooms, a reformed sliding hill, an expanded parking lot, and additional lighting.

A potential new improved audiovisual system for council chambers is also on the agenda. The set-up would for the live-streaming of meetings and facilitate telephone and video conferencing. The new equipment and installation are estimated to cost up to $140,000.

Councillors will also get an update on the financial cost of COVID-19 to the city. The city’s finance department is now forecasting Prince Albert will lose $1,493,783 by the end of 2020 due to the pandemic. That’s up around $400,000 from the most recent previous estimate.

Money from the federal and provincial governments to help municipalities deal with COVID-19 will more than cover that deficit. According to council documents, the city still has $2.9 million left over the provincial MEEP program and federal safe restart fund. However, as the Director of Financial Services indicates in a report to council, the City does not expect to receive any more money for the pandemic, and that surplus should be considered to cover the continued financial impact of COVID-19 in 2021 and potentially 2022.

Monday’s city council executive meeting starts at 4:00 p.m.
