Kyla Art Show goes virtual

Prince Albert’s Kyla Artist Group is taking their popular annual show online for its 42nd edition.

Linda Jensen is a founding member of the over 40-year-old group. She told paNOW she and her fellow artists knew it would be impossible to hold the Kyla Art Show – which typically draws 350 to 600 people – in-person this year, but wanted to find a way to continue it in a different form.

“With so many years in the community we just didn’t want to fritter away a year and not have any presence,” she said, adding the well-known show also serves as motivation for members of the group to create new work.

The Kyla Art Show will go live on the group’s new website Sunday and run until Dec. 9. All work from the 15 local artists involved will be for sale and a silent auction will benefit the Prince Albert Optimist Club.

Although the format has changed, Jensen said in terms of content, the show is going to be “as good or even better than past years.”

The pandemic has given many artists additional inspiration and time leading to increased artistic innovation, she continued.

“Probably most of us have had more time to search for subject matter or be inspired by nature,” she explained.

Personally, Jensen who works primarily with water colour and acrylic has begun experimenting with felted wool projects.

This weekend’s event will be the Kyla Artists Group’s second online show (they hosted one on Facebook in May) but the first exhibition using their new website.

After the show, the group plans to continue to use the online portal as a virtual gallery.

“That will be a real asset,” Jensen said.
