Wallace Stegner House, one of Canada’s first writer/artist residencies needs your help

Nov 24, 2020 | 9:09 AM

This historic, rural, remote artists/writers residency program needs your help in order to keep operating!

Our 50K fundraising campaign goal is 35% of the way there.

Few people realize that artist/writer residencies are not eligible for operational funding in Canada. Compound that with COVID-19, the cancellation of our annual fundraiser, the loss of rental income, and now a roof that needs to be repaired—this rural, historic, remote, not-for-profit needs help!

Operated entirely by local volunteers from the community of Eastend, Saskatchewan (pop. 503) Wallace Stegner House is an artist/writer residency program in the childhood home of renowned environmentalist and Pulitzer prize winner, Wallace Stegner.

As part of a rich legacy for 30 years, the House has hosted over 250 artists and writers from around the world. It is administered by Eastend Arts Council, a registered charity and not-for-profit.

Launching a GoFundMe campaign to stay afloat in these times

Stegner House is launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to subsidize residency fees for artists and writers, cover operational and administrative costs, continue programming for the community, and maintain and repair this Municipal Heritage Property.

Stegner House is a big achievement for a small Canadian town, “Stegner House has the privilege and challenge of being in the smallest town [Eastend] of all residencies as it has only 500 residents.” Ann-Marie Joan Metten, author of Community-Run Writer-In-Residence Programs in Canada

Be part of the “legacy of hope”

Wallace Stegner the celebrated writer and environmentalist was deeply committed to the advancement of writers. He founded the Stanford Creative Writing Program and Writing Fellowships in 1946. Saskatchewan author and environmentalist, Trevor Herriot, observed that Stegner’s triumph as an artist-activist, was a “letter he wrote in 1960 that led to the passing of The Wilderness Act… defend[ing] more than 100 million acres of Federal public lands from any activity or development that would destroy it.”

The ideals Wallace Stegner devoted his life to is as important today as it was in 1960. You can be part of the legacy of hope by helping support what we do.

Testimonials

“Stegner House deserves—and needs—our support.”Candace Savage, author of Geography of Blood

If Stegner haunts his childhood home, as he once promised he would, ‘to keep track of what goes on,’ I like to imagine he looks upon the goings on favourably, as its genial spirit pleased to see others drawing inspiration from his home and the town he once called his ‘little womb-village.’Trevor Herriot, author River in a Dry Land

“Wallace Stegner House provides… the quiet community in which to work in solitude and silence and in a landscape of great beauty… [it] provides a service not only to the community, and to the artists, but also to this country for it is artists who define and describe it and thus make it real… Without additional funding, and after thirty very successful years, the House could disappear. For all these reasons, I encourage all those who can to support the Wallace Stegner House Artists’ Retreat. I plan to donate immediately.”Sharon Butala, founder, author, and Officer of the Order of Canada

Eastend Arts Council is a registered charity and will issue tax receipts for donations over $10.
