First responders remind residents to be safe outdoors while decorating

Just in time to decorate for the holidays, Prince Albert residents can take advantage of some upcoming warm weather to get their outdoor lights and lawn decorations up.

Friday will have a daily average of 2 Celsius with Saturday only dropping to -1 C. Sunday will be much colder, dropping to -11 C according to the Weather Network.

With the weather warming up, things may get slippery and taking caution will be a key reminder to avoiding any unnecessary injury.

In a media release from Parkland Ambulance, they are reminding the public that although using a ladder might seem like a simple task, if snow, ice and uneven surfaces mix with snow covered footwear and slippery metal, one can fall quite easily.

Lyle Karasiuk, director of public affairs for the Parkland Ambulance would like to remind residents to stay alert and stay safe.

“Whether they are on a ladder or venturing on the roof, always have a word with yourself and make sure you are doing so safely,” Karasiuk said.

Some things to consider are, using the proper ladder, not overextending it, and making sure it is secure against a surface. Having someone to support it at the base is always an added bonus. Before climbing, with decorations in hand, be sure to dry your boots off of snow and ice to avoid slipping.

Another consideration to keep your property, and those around you safe is to make sure your decorations are properly anchored.

“If we’re attaching decorations in the yard, make sure it stays attached,” Karasiuk said. “Some of our decorations can be blown around and can be quite hazardous if they strike something.”

A final reminder is to not overload a circuit with any decoration that requires power.

“Make sure you are using the right cords for the right purpose,” Karasiuk added. “Do not use an indoor extension cord outside, and make sure you do not have a contraption where you are plugging in more than what the socket is designed for.”

Trevor Wingert of the Prince Albert Fire Department agrees the most important part to staying ladder safe is having a solid base.

“A lot of times people will get up to the top, and the ladder will slide right out creating a chance for a serious injury,” Wingert said.

Get outside and light up the city while the weather is nice, but do so with caution, ask for assistance, and stay safe.
