Prince Albert couple, charged in death of Humboldt man, await decision on trial

The fate of a Prince Albert couple charged in the kidnapping and death of a Humboldt man last February, remains uncertain.

Preliminary hearing dates have now been set for both Steven Veilleux (Feb. 5, 2021) and Jodie Lynn Veilleux (Nov. 18). Those hearings at Saskatoon Provincial Court will determine if the Crown’s evidence is strong enough to warrant a trial.

In late February, Allan Douglas Garrioch (who also went by the last name Glasier) was reported missing and the investigation later revealed foul play was involved. His remains were found about a week later in a rural area near Bruno, northwest of Humboldt.

Steven Veilleux, 42, was later charged with first-degree murder, as well as causing indignity to a body, kidnapping, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Jodie Lynn Veilleux, 41, was not charged with murder but still faces a number of other serious charges including kidnapping, forcible confinement, break-and-enter, and assault with a weapon.

Steven’s son Brettin Veilleux-Pelletier was one of three other men charged and received an 18-year prison sentence. Late last month, the 22-year-old entered guilty pleas to a number of charges including manslaughter, unlawful confinement, and break-and-enter.

According to court records obtained by paNOW from the sentencing hearing on Oct. 29, the alleged kidnapping and initial assault were motivated by a desire to steal drugs, money and a Hells Angels vest.

Veilleux-Pelletier told police another accused offered to pay him to help get the vest from Garrioch, but claimed he didn’t know Garrioch was going to be killed.

After beating Garrioch with a cattle prod and taking some of Garrioch’s belongings, Veilleux-Pelletier sat in a vehicle parked outside when the actual murder took place.

Defence lawyer Blaine Beaven described his client as more of a follower than a leader and said he deeply regretted what happened.

“He ended up following the wrong people in this,” Beaven said.

Joshua Domenic Canavero and Tristan Daniel Morrison have also been charged in the case, and have pending court dates.
