A student at Carlton Comprehensive Public High School has been asked to paint a large mural on one of the walls at the South Hill Mall.

Jordyn Twist, a Grade 12 student, said she has always been involved with art and when this opportunity came up she did not want to miss it.

“I saw the opportunity and I seized it,” Twist said. “I saw this amazing thing happening in front of me and thought I have to take this and run with it.”

During an interview with paNOW, Twist’s art teacher Melanie Mirasty said this project is connected to a program at the school called ‘Carlton Collection Builders.’

According to Mirasty, Carlton won a youth leadership award in 2019 that awarded the school a grant to support students with extracurricular activities. In addition to Twist being the feature artist for the mural at the mall, she will also create 10 pieces of art which will be sent to different art galleries in the upcoming year.

Mirasty told paNOW the mall reached out earlier this year to offer the mural project. Due to the pandemic it
was put on hold. Twist is now getting back to work this fall.

Twist added she works on the mural on her off days from school, including putting time in on weekends, and should be finished in the next couple of weeks.

The mural celebrates family traditions, Twist told paNOW.

“It’s a community mural, representing First Nation culture,” Twist said. “It celebrates traditions like family, and storytelling and the importance of the child.”

Jordyn is receiving help on the project from her father, Christopher, who is a graphic designer.

“I want him to go on the journey with me,” Jordyn explained.

Twist explained the meaning behind the mural.

“Everything in the mural supports the child,” Twist said. “The women care for the child, and there are people coming from the river with fish to feed the child. There is a fire, the teepee, and a huge raven.”

The story of a raven stealing the sun from the chief of the people and taking it to the sky for everyone to see is represented in the piece.

Melanie Mirasty, Jordyn’s art teacher at Carlton High School added the mural connects closely to Prince Albert as the river in the mural, which supports life, is a lot like the North Saskatchewan River.

“The mall was excited about that image, because the river is such an important part of our landscape,” Mirasty said.

South Hill Mall’s property manager, Mike Ellis said adding murals and art around the mall will be a good project for students and will be beneficial for the location as well.

“Our asset manager likes the mural so much, he said ‘lets expand that and maybe we can get some additional murals up in the mall,’” Ellis said. “That’s what we are doing at this time.”
