After no-shows at court, man receives sentence for gun bust

After failing to show for his scheduled sentencing hearing twice, the man responsible for having restricted guns inside a home received a two-year jail sentence in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.

Brandon Couillonneur, 25, was one of two people originally charged in connection to a weapons bust in May 2019, and subsequently entered guilty pleas to charges related to careless use of a firearm as well possession of an authorized firearm.

Inside the home in the 1900 block of 15th St. W, police found two sawed off .22 caliber rifles, as well as numerous rounds of ammunition and bear spray.

Couillonneur was initially scheduled to be sentenced in September, but failed twice to show up after initially telling his lawyer he was experiencing car trouble. Couillonneur was arrested earlier this month and formally sentenced on Nov. 6.

Jordana Napope was the co-accused in the case, but her weapons charges were withdrawn last May after Couillonneur took full responsibility for the guns.

Napope was instead sentenced on just two charges related to breach of court orders. After already spending 59 days in custody, she was essentially sentenced to time served.

“I can’t help but notice you are getting a huge break,” Judge Felicia Daunt told Napope at the May hearing. “I hope you take this and make some changes in your life.”

As for Couillonneur, he has roughly seven months remaining on his sentence after being granted 521 days total credit for the time he spent in remand custody. Couillonneur is also prohibited from owing or using a firearm for 10 years.
