Election Day: good turnout expected

Nov 9, 2020 | 8:30 AM

Prince Albert electors go to the polls today to choose their mayor, city councillors, and school board trustees for the next four years. And despite the popularity of the six days of drive-thru advance voting, and the heavy snowfall over the weekend, the city’s returning officer (RO) is still expecting a good turnout of citizens.

“I think we will see them; I think people want their voices heard and I think people will come and make their votes count,” Sherry Person told paNOW.

She was speaking following the successful showing that saw 3,303 people vote from their vehicle at the PAEX between Oct.28 and Nov.5, which was set up because of the COVID pandemic. That number is around 130 per cent up on the 1,427 who decided to vote in advance in 2016.

However, based on the four-person mayoral race last time, which accumulated over 10,200 voting participants, that does mean at least 7,000 voters can be expected to take part today.

Person said she and her team will be ready at the nine polling stations dotted across the city which will operate from 9.a.m. to 8 p.m.

Speaking to the big snowfall, Person said city crews would be working hard to ensure road and pedestrian access to all polling stations., and assured residents about the current health protocols.

“The polls will be safe, just make sure you bring your masks,” she said, noting the recent provincial government changes mean the wearing of a face mask is now mandatory.

She has one key tip if you’re looking to get through the voting process quickly as every voter needs to complete a form before they can make their mark.

“There is a voter registration on the paVOTES website, you can print it off, fill it in -except for signing it off- and bring it in and your wait time will be a lot less.”

For those who can’t print a form, they can be filled out at the polling station. Voters must also bring I.D.

Prince Albert uses automated ballot counters so the tallying up of votes is quick. Results of the election could be in before 9 p.m.

The city is also reminding the public that transit is free all day today to help voters get to the polls. The system will operate with normally scheduled routes and hours, opening from 6:15 a.m.and shutting down at 7:15 p.m. Masks on transit are mandatory and people need to bring their own.
