Water pump house construction to cause detour to Rotary Trail

Nov 5, 2020 | 3:29 PM

The existing raw water pump house that provides Prince Albert water from the North Saskatchewan River has portions of the facility dating back to 1920.

Construction for the new pump house will begin shortly, but there will be a detour to the Rotary Trail between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue West starting on Monday.

The pump house is expected to be completed by February 2022. The first stage will be a deep excavation of 15.9 metres, which is estimated to be done by the end of the year or early 2021.

“The scope of the excavation size is massive,” capital projects manager Nykol Miller said. “That’s the first step of the project that they will be working on.”

Since the trail is expected to be closed for a year, there will be a temporary detour built around. Starting on Monday, there will be signs in place to direct users of the Rotary Trail how to navigate the area.

“Watch for directional signage. There will be pedestrian crosswalks in place for the crossing at River Street West,” Miller said. “We’ll try to have the trail back in use to the original location as soon as construction allows.”
