Winter is coming

Heavy snowfalls expected this weekend

It’s looking like Saskatchewan and the rest of the Prairies are going to have their first big snowfall of the year this weekend.

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang, the Prince Albert area can expect up to 20-25 cm’s of snow throughout Saturday and Sunday. North Battleford is right on the northside of the snowfall area and could see 20-30 cm’s. Melfort could see 30+ cm’s of snow.

Lang said that now is the perfect time to prepare both your home and your vehicles before what could be a snowy and windy weekend.

“We have some mild weather now, so take the time while the weather’s nice to get the yard ready, get the leaves out of the eavestroughs, get the shovels ready, get your car ready, snow tires, emergency kit and that type of thing,” Lang said.

Southern Saskatchewan may have even heavier snowfalls this weekend. Lang anticipates the Diefenbaker Lake and Elbow areas will be the hardest hit and could see upwards of 50 cm’s of snow throughout the weekend.

“It looks like the snow will be widespread. Sunday looks to be the worst day for the heavy snow, so travel is going to be a nightmare on Sunday,” Lang said.

The Southeast corner of the province could also receive some freezing rain over the weekend instead of a big snowfall.

Lang does not recommend travelling throughout the weekend.

“If people can move their travel to another time, reschedule it, cancel it, that might be an idea. Keep abreast of all the warnings that will come out and always check that Highway Hotline before heading out.”
