Culvert replacement on Highway 693 completed

An important infrastructure project impacting a local highway that is a primary road for people in nearby communities has been completed with no issues.

Highway 693 between Highway 3 and the old highway north of Holbein was temporarily closed in the RM of Shellbrook.

On Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. crews worked to replace a plugged culvert that was causing water to build up rather than flow through.

RM councillor Cliff Skauge explained the new culvert had been put in place late Tuesday morning.

“They were just in the process of back filling and tamping,” he said. “They didn’t experience any problems that they were somewhat anticipating because we weren’t sure what kind of sub soil was there.”

He added there was no delay, and they were finished the project by 5 p.m. The crew of six workers on the project inserted a 400 mm culvert under the road and Skauge said they dug into a new part of the road instead of pulling out the old unusable culvert because it would have been harder to excavate.

“This way they just dug about a 20-inch trench and widened it out so they could put proper fill in and compacted it,” he explained.

The culvert was covered with dirt and gravel and will remain that way until the summer. He explained the culvert was placed near the old one and he supported the decision to dig a new trench.

During the road closure they had two detours set up two miles east and west of Holbein on Highway 3 and he said the detours went smoothly and he received no complaints from the community.
