‘He wasn’t the kind of kid to say that he was in trouble’: mother pleads for help in search for son

Oct 26, 2020 | 5:00 PM

Just over six weeks have passed since Debbie Chaboyer’s son Tristan was reported missing, and today she finds herself no closer to holding his hand or hearing his voice.

According to a media release last month from the Prince Albert Police Service, Tristan was last seen on Sept. 4 and was reported missing to police on Sept. 10. About a week later police ruled the disappearance to be suspicious but did not explain why. Chaboyer told paNOW her son’s clothes were found in a wooded area behind Victoria Hospital, and there was blood on them.

“[Police] found his phone in Saskatoon,” she said.

A DNA test with Tristan’s parents soon confirmed the blood was in fact his. Chaboyer explained she last talked to her son on Sept. 4 and said nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

“He wasn’t the kind of kid to say that he was in trouble. He knew how to hide those things from me,” she said.

After not hearing from her son for three days, Chaboyer said she contacted the Prince Albert Correctional Centre and was told he had been there but had been released to another community. On Sept. 9, Chaboyer called the jail again.

“A male answered and I asked him if my son was in jail and he said no,” she said.

According to court records, Chaboyer was scheduled to have some charges spoken to at Prince Albert Provincial Court on Sept. 9 but he did not appear. The file was placed on bench warrant status. Meanwhile his mother just wants answers and is hoping someone with information will come forward.

“The people I didn’t want him to be around, none of them have contacted me or I didn’t even know them or I wouldn’t want to know them,” she said.

At the time of his disappearance Tristan was living in Prince Albert and worked at Star House Restaurant but failed to show up for one of his shifts. To add to Chaboyer’s grief and anxiety, she said people from within her home community of Cumberland House have been calling her with unsubstantiated details they have heard.

Police have not confirmed Debbie Chaboyer’s comments, only saying that the investigation is ongoing.

Family members also continue to search daily for Chaboyer. Anyone with information about the case has been encouraged to contact the Prince Albert Police Service at 306-953-4222.
