The list of candidates for school board trustee positions has been finalized for the Prince Albert Roman Catholic School Division.

paNOW reported on five candidates earlier this week. This article covers the remaining four nominees.

Patrick Hordyski has held a seat on the board for the past eight years and is running for a third term.

“First off, it is for the children,” Hordyski said when asked about why he is campaigning again.

“Our students are the number one reason I am running. I want to continue to see our students grow and be an advocate for them. I want to give them the best opportunity to be productive members of society.”

Hordyski commented on the positive restart the school division had this fall. With his previous experience on the board he would like to help carry that momentum forward.

Andrea Ring will be running for a trustee position for the first time. Ring has previous experience on the parent council at St. Francis School.

“I want to make sure everyone stays safe, [during the pandemic] we’ll see what is brought up in the first couple of meetings, I’m sure I’ll have a few ideas,” Ring told paNOW.

Ring added a priority for her will be working with the school division’s budget to help save money as much as possible while delivering the best possible product for students and staff. Keeping faith-based education at the forefront will be a primary goal as well.

Another candidate running for the first time is Gloria Mahussier. Mahussier has served as president of Inclusion Saskatchewan’s Board of Directors for the past 10 years and was previously a part of the St. Francis School parent council.

“I believe children have the right to a good education and I believe in a faith-based environment,” Mahussier said.

Mahussier added if she gets elected to the board, she is wanting to help keep students and teachers safe from COVID-19 by making sure the student body and educators are following protocols. She is also wanting to share with the community more of the work the school board does.

Zenik Rabiej is also running as a new nominee. Rabiej currently serves as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus St. George’s Council.

“The Catholic system of education has come under attack in recent years. We must be vigilant or else in a few years that system could be gone. That is one of the reasons why I am running for the school board,” Rabiej said.

A challenge Rabiej is wanting to help overcome is the animosity towards Catholic education systems and help prevent situations like the Theodore case which would prevent government from funding non-Catholic students attending Catholic schools.

The election is being held on Nov. 9. A total of nine candidates will be available to choose from for the six available seats.

paNOW will also bring you coverage of the remaining candidates for the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division.
