Local Green wants sustainable economy

The Green Party candidate in Prince Albert Northcote for the provincial election, Sarah Kraynick, is calling for more effort to be made towards a knowledge economy in and around the city to help business people stay in this region.

Kraynick, who works in the cyber security field of IT, admits to ‘straying from the Green Party standard line of environmentalism’ in rather focusing on sustainable business and economics. She says Prince Albert needs to think more ambitiously about making change.

“We have a lot of good ideas and good people in Prince Albert but it just seems people pooh-pooh ideas because we’re not in the big city like Saskatoon or Regina,” she told paNOW.

She said Christopher Lake was an example where high speed internet infrastructure was lacking.

“Start looking at tech, remote work… in smaller communities we don’t have the internet [connection] to actually do work,” she said, noting on one occasion she had to travel from her cabin at Christopher Lake to the city just to get a connection good enough to handle a video conference.

Kraynick, who chose to run in P.A. Northcote because ‘it is more progressive,’ will centre her campaign on a sustainable economy but she is not calling for the tap on oil and gas to be shut off because those sectors provided lots of jobs.

When asked why the electorate should vote for her rather than the so-called established bigger parties, Kraynick said people need to know they have options.

“You see it even in federal elections, people think, ‘oh they can’t win so why vote for them’ and they end up voting for the least obnoxious choice, [but] you do have options. There are options, look for them. If enough people vote for them, they’ll get into power.”
