Winter Warning

Time to ‘psychologically prepare’ for winter as temperatures drop

Daytime highs in the mid to high teens over Thanksgiving weekend may have represented the final traces of summer in Saskatchewan.

Heavy winds have brought in cooler air, with overnight temperatures well below zero expected this week.

Meteorologist Terri Lang with Environment Canada advised residents to let go of summer and begin preparing for winter with snowfall right around the corner in the Prince Albert region.

“Looks like the best chance [for first snowfall] is Friday and Saturday, so people should psychologically prepare for that,” Lang said.

While leaves are still dropping from trees, leaving plenty of yard work ahead, it’s important to take care of other seasonal tasks like blowing out underground sprinkler lines as the mercury could drop as low as -10 Celsius on Thursday. As for those leaves, there will be plenty of wind this week to help knock them down.

“I think it’s going to be a pretty windy week in general,” Lang said. “It is that time of year where it is typically very windy because of that changing from warm to cold.”

Of course, there is a chance that an unseasonably warm system could still roll in over the coming weeks, with record highs for late October still touching 20 C. It’s just as likely we see temperatures closer to record lows, which are more like -20 C.

If things are to follow a usual pattern, you can expect to see single digit daytime highs, and overnight lows regularly in the negatives.

Following up her comment about being psychologically prepared for winter, Lang mentioned a few things to get used to.

“You may have to scrape the car, get the heater on, use the seat heaters if you’ve got them. It’s a big change from walking around in a T-shirt on the weekend.”
