Saskatchewan Queer and Trans Youth Network – Online

The UR Pride Centre in Regina is an organization that supports LGBT youth and adults (and their allies) across Saskatchewan.

We’ve recently relaunched our Saskatchewan Queer and Trans Youth Network, a free online leadership training program.

We’re actively seeking rural youth, LGBT or allied, to apply to be part of this great opportunity.

Rural youth who are LGBT or questioning face higher rates of suicide, substance use, social isolation, and descrimination.

This program aims to reach these youth and empower them to feel pride in who they are and create change in their communities.

In the past, we’ve been able to travel to schools and communities to promote this program, however, due to covid we haven’t been able to do this. Building relationships with these communities was important to us and trying to do this kind of work online ourselves falls short.

Last year, the project was able to connect with 2 LGBTQ and allied youth across Saskatchewan to share in learning about community service, civic engagement, activism, and local organizing.

An array of youth led events and projects aimed at creating change and building community took place across the province. Youth made lasting connections with mentors and fellow 2SLGBTQ community organizers through the Community Action Assembly in November 2019 and our follow-up CAA in February 2020.

During the Community Action Assembly, participants learned about project management, grant writing and media relations. They also attended workshops on 2SLGBTQ history, harm reduction, accessible community organizing, trauma informed care within 2SLGBTQ communities and more.

During the follow-up CAA UR Pride learned about one participant, located in Yorkton SK, who launched a project called “Pride for Days”.

She worked in partnership with local organizations such as the Yorkton Film Festival, Yorkton Pride, and the Boy and Girls Club to plan monthly social events for 2SLGBTQ youth in Yorkton such as movie and game nights.

In addition to her community organization partnerships, she was able to secure sponsorship from local businesses.

Since this project was the first of its kind in Yorkton SK, she was met with resistance within her community.

However, her events have been overwhelmingly supported and well attended.

UR Pride is proud to call this person a SaskQTY Alumni!This year, the project is all online.

Because of this, UR Pride have been unable to visit organizations across Saskatchewan to promote this opportunity.

UR Pride is asking for youth organizations and Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) to refer their youth to participate in the project.

For every applicant referred, UR Pride will pay $10 (to a maximum of $200) to the organization or Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).
