RM of Prince Albert extends property tax deadline

Oct 13, 2020 | 12:00 PM

Ratepayers in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Prince Albert will have a bit more breathing room when it comes to paying their property taxes this year.

The RM’s council previously passed a resolution last May extending the seven per cent discount offering to Oct. 31. However at last week’s council meeting, another resolution was passed extending the deadline even further to Dec. 31.

“I think there is a propensity, in most municipalities, to use any government funding on infrastructure projects or municipal assets, however given the financial hardships everyone is facing during this pandemic, we felt it was important that this money be given directly to our ratepayers in the form of a tax discount,” Reeve Eric Schmalz explained in an emailed statement.

The main reason why council was able to afford extending the deadline was because at the end of September this year, the RM received $212,488. (Based on a per-capita formula) in “COVID Relief Funding” from the provincial government.
