Candidate wants to bring Ward 2 issues to the fore

Ward 2 candidate Kim Conarroe says she wants to be a voice for her ward.

“I will work for the residents of Ward 2 by listening to their concerns and building partnerships to help move their issues forward,” the early years teacher told paNOW.

Addressing crime and addiction is among her top priorities.

“I feel like our police force is really overworked and underfunded,” she said. “To start, we need to create neighbourhood watches in each neighbourhood because if we’re all vigilant then that will make the police force’s job easier.”

She explained other issues she plans to advocate for are specific to the different areas within Ward 2, which each have their own distinct concerns.

Residents across the river want “fair and reasonable services along with tax fairness,” she explained.

Meanwhile, business owners have told her they want more done to attract shoppers to the downtown.

“We need to look at revitalizing our downtown area and getting people back down to Central Avenue,” she said.

Additionally, Ward 2’s residential areas have a high number of seniors and youth, Conarroe said. She believes more programming is needed for both demographics.

Conarroe grew up in Prince Albert, but taught in Wollaston Lake and North Battleford for around 10 years before moving back to be closer to family.

Asked how her 21 years of experience as an early years teacher might help her be an effective city councillor, Conarroe cited her patience, listening skills and decision-making ability.

“I have to make decisions a hundred times a day and I feel like I’m a good communicator,” she said.

Conarroe is the fourth candidate in what has become the most crowded field in the civic election.

The other contenders for the Ward 2 seat are incumbent Terra Lennox-Zepp, Devin Gorder and Dana Dirks.
