MELFORT, Sask. – Canadian Pacific (CP) had its best-ever third quarter and September for transporting grain.

CP moved 7.72 million metric tonnes which is up 10.8 per cent from the previous record set in 2014.

CP also set a new September record for shipping Canadian grain and grain products, moving 2.8 million metric tonnes.

CP Vice-President Sales and Marketing Grain and Fertilizers Joan Hardy said good grain movement is critical to Canada’s grain supply chain and its customers.

“The CP team showed itself ready for this fall’s harvest, supporting customers and their supply chains to get grain moving off the combine and to market. Customers tell us the crop that continues to come off the fields is large, and CP is ready to keep it moving,” Hardy said in a news release.

Saskatchewan could benefit from $10 billion federal infrastructure funding program.

The money from the Canada Infrastructure Bank is targeted at agriculture irrigation, rural broadband services, clean power, building improvements and zero-emission buses.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau anticipated significant support for farmers but would not be specific about the Lake Diefenbaker project.

“It is definitely one of the projects that is on the radar of the bank, but it is too early to be so specific. We will let all of the partners complete their work,” she said.

Early work has begun on the proposed $4 billion, 10-year project which will double the irrigated farmland around Lake Diefenbaker to half a million acres.

4-H Canada is sponsoring a fundraiser to support youth.
