Saskatchewan livestock group plans virtual annual meeting

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) will use an online format to take care of business this year.

SSGA President Bill Huber said the 107th annual general meeting will be a virtual event.

He said they delayed as long as possible wanting there to be another option.

“We had been hoping to meet in-person,” Huber said. “We held off as long as we could before deciding to hold the meeting online, but the pandemic is still uncertain. People have to make plans, so we had to make a decision.”

Huber said while a virtual meeting was the SSGA’s second-best option, it’s important that the association conduct business.

“Our members’ safety was our main concern in going virtual. We also have to think of our responsibilities to the community at large. We’ll do what’s necessary, and we’ll look ahead to our usual AGM and convention next year,” Huber said.

An annual meeting is required under the SSGA bylaws. Huber said it is also an opportunity for livestock producers to put forward resolutions from members through their zone meetings. Resolutions will often identify an issue of concern to producers and direct the SSGA’s lobbying efforts.

This year, members will vote on lobbying the federal government over its decision to cancel the registration of strychnine for controlling Richardson’s Ground Squirrel populations. There will also be discussion on whether the use of the term “meat” should be used to describe plant-based food products. Board elections will also be held for six positions.

The inaugural general meeting of the new Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation will take place in conjunction with the annual meeting. The foundation is a registered charity whose goals include conserving agricultural lands, advancing education, and assisting victims of disasters.

The meeting will be held 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 14. Registration for the virtual meeting is now open on the SSGA website. The agenda and other details are also posted as well.

The 2021 SSGA annual meeting will be held in Assiniboia.
