Farmers are being encouraged to secure their property and keep grain samples after separate grain thefts in Manitoba.

The first theft was reported in the Cypress, Man. area in June where 20 tonnes bushels of grain were stolen. Police said this could have happened as late as last winter.

In another incident a farmer reported roughly 50 tonnes of canola had been stolen from a yard near Kaleida, Man. between Sept. 10 to 18.

RCMP said many grain storage facilities are on unoccupied yard sites and thieves would have easy access as an auger is usually on the site.

Police also urged farmers to keep samples of the grain in bins. It can be taken to the elevator for comparison. This method was used successfully on another case.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) said it was pleased to hear agriculture mentioned in the throne speech.

CFA President Mary Robinson said the government recommitted to compensate farmers operating under supply management, but farmers in other sectors need an equal commitment in the form of improved business risk management (BRM) programs.

“The CFA membership has indicated that improving these BRM programs is the most important action to take if the federal government truly wants to help the sector lead the Canadian economy out of the pandemic and spur significant economic growth,” Robinson said in a media release.

CFA represents over 200,000 farm families across Canada.

Olymel said it will spend $31.5 million to expand its poultry slaughtering and cutting plant in St-Damase, Montrgie, Que.

The money will be used to equip the plant with additional cutting, deboning and tray packing lines, as well as new high-capacity, state-of-the-art equipment.

The work, which is expected to last about a year, will take place without interrupting the plant’s current operations.

Olymel’s St-Damase facility produces more than 70 million kilograms of poultry products each year.
