Sasktel expands cell service with the addition of towers

MELFORT, Sask. – SaskTel will be setting up 74 new cell phone towers in the next year.

The focus will be on underserved rural and resort communities and is the last phase of the Wireless Saskatchewan initiative announced three years ago.

SaskTel President and CEO Doug Burnett said the new towers will help to bolster and add capacity to their network to meet the growing demand for wireless data.

The minister responsible for SaskTel Don Morgan said the initiative has provided roughly 200 new towers in rural areas.

“It is a top priority to enhance access to communications services in rural Saskatchewan,” Morgan said in a news release. “While these 74 towers will be the final phase of this initiative, we will continue to work with SaskTel and our rural stakeholders to continue to improve communication within the province.”

Once the final phase is complete the provinces wireless network will include 1,000 cell towers.

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) announced yesterday it had set up a rural connectivity task force to find out why a digital divide exists in Saskatchewan and identify the necessary steps to ensure equal access in the future.
