Poppy masks to be added to legion’s fundraiser

The Royal Canadian Legion is introducing a new fundraiser with poppy-themed masks.

After reopening last week, demand for the masks have been high for the Prince Albert branch. A large order of masks was made immediately, and should be arriving soon, Rick Hodgson, president of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 2 in Prince Albert told paNOW.

“We ordered some and they went out fast. As soon as people saw them, they wanted to buy them, so they are on order right now and they should be here this week,” Hodgson said. “We only opened last week, and a lot of people were interested.”

Hodgson told paNOW the public can purchase the masks online at the legion’s website, and in person at Branch No. 2 in Prince Albert.

According to Hodgson the masks are being sold alongside the poppy campaign. All proceeds of the masks sold in Prince Albert will go towards the local legion.

“The masks are the same as other cloth masks that are being made, and are probably better than the paper ones,” Hodgson said.

If anyone is interested in popping by and purchasing one to help support the legion, we will gladly sell it to them.”

According to Colin Reise, chair of the poppy campaign for branch No. 2, the fundraiser will still be running this year in support of the Veterans beginning Oct. 30.

“You will see some significant changes this year. When we visit stores, we will have to follow certain COVID protocols for each individual store,” Reise said. “We’re still in the planning stages but we have been notified that there will be stores taking point of sale donations, stores that will allow us to have a table, and some that will just have poppy boxes.”

According to Reise, anyone can order a poppy, bracelet, or wreath online and then pick it up at the hall on Eight St. E.

“Funds collected from the poppy campaign are for veterans only,” Reise said. “It is important for the public to know.”

Poppy masks are being sold at $10 each.

Editors Note: This story was amended to correct erroneous information given to paNOW. The proceeds of the masks sold in P.A. go towards the local legion not the poppy fund.
