Speed-monitoring signs hope to slow P.A. drivers down

Prince Albert is hoping to get drivers to slow down with 24 speed monitoring signs placed at various locations around the city.

Sixteen of the signs, which were funded through the provincial Traffic Safety Fund, are in school zones along with raised crosswalks. Another eight portable displays were purchased by the city and will be moved to various key locations, as determined by city councillors.

Prince Albert Police Service Cst. Rob Lindsay with the Combined Traffic Services of Saskatchewan division said he hopes the lights and colours of the signs serve as an important reminder for the public.

“In this day and age a lot of people are very very busy,” he said. “Hopefully when they see [the signs] they realize it’s time for them to slow down because there could be a kid just around the corner or somebody crossing the street.”

The signs also gather data on how fast drivers are going and what times of day speeding is most common. Based on this information, police can be deployed to problem areas.

“Speeding is a common problem in our neighborhoods,” Mayor Greg Dionne said. “Through this initiative we want to get drivers attention and let you know that if you ignore the message you may risk a speeding ticket.”

Meanwhile MLA Joe Hargrave, said they’re “not done yet,” and Prince Albert will be eligible to apply for more money for safety projects like raised crosswalks and speed monitoring signs in 2021.
