New youth centre announced at Montreal Lake

An exciting new venture has officially been unearthed on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN).

Early Wednesday morning, a sod turning ceremony was held for a new youth centre. Chief Frank Roberts told paNOW the facility will offer the community’s youth a wide array of activities.

“But also they will have a couple offices for mentoring programs that we want to have set up for the youth, kind of like life skills programs for them,” he said.

The total cost of the project is about $550,000 and will be paid for largely thanks to a recent $2 million settlement reached with the federal government with respect to ammo and twine encroachment.

“We hear a lot during elections that people want to do things for the youth and this is actually the very first time we’ve been able to have something concrete,” Roberts said.

The site for the youth centre is across from the soccer field, and Roberts explained a group of summer students played a leading role with the selection process. Future plans for the facility also include a deck so people can watch the games.

In addition to the youth centre at MLCN, work is also underway on a similar project at Little Red reserve. Both facilities are expected to be opened later this Fall.
