Property crimes and crimes against persons decreased in August

The Prince Albert Police Service continues to take a big bite out of property crime, according to August statistics.

With specific relation to break and enters, the five-year average for the month of August is 75, and there were 52 last month.Year to date there has been a nearly 60 per cent decrease compared to last year.

A number other areas also saw decreases including robbery complaints, assaults, and theft under $5,000.

With that in mind, there are two areas which continue to challenge police: crimes related to drugs and guns.

The police service seized 96 firearms this year compared to 75 firearm seizures in 2019, which represents a 28 per cent increase. The five-year average of firearms seized by the service is 78.4.

There was a 66.67 per cent increase last month for both possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance crimes, when compared to August 2019.

Meanwhile overall call volumes remain high. During the three months of summer this year, police responded to 13,320 calls for service. This compares to 11,918 calls for the same time period in 2019.
