Meals in the Fields gives back to farming community this fall

NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – A North Battleford area beef producer is one of the latest winners in the Meals in the Fields contest.

Connie Walker said it was a thrill to receive free Domino’s Pizza for her family and crew, along with some fun humour from CJNB Morning Show host Grant Schutte who helped deliver the pizza and gifts to her ranch Thursday.

“It was great,” she said with a laugh. “We enjoyed that very much.”

Walker also received some presents, including a $1,000 gift certificate from Scott Campbell Dodge.

Many Battlefords and surrounding area farmers and their teams are being treated to a free hot lunch this fall as part of CJNB’s Meals in the Fields contest.

Trent Gatzke of Scott Campbell Dodge Ltd., one of the many participating sponsors in the project, said it’s a good way to give back to farming families at this busy time of the year.

“I love this,” he said. “I come from a farm background. My parents had a small business in a farm community. Then, we got involved in farming ourselves.”

He said businesses in the Battlefords area “understand where all our bread comes from,” from the farming community.

“We reap the rewards of what farmers take off of their fields,” Gatzke said. “So I’m really happy to be involved in this project.”

The Meals in the Fields project this year replaces the Harvest Breakfast event, which had to be cancelled due to the province’s COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings.

“Our way of saying thank you to the farmers and ranchers out there is delivering Meals in the Fields,” CJNB Morning Show host Grant Schutte said. “So they get a meal for 10, some door prizes. We deliver it right to their location, their farm house, their yard or out in the field, and they really enjoy it.”

Producers can visit cjnb.ca to sign up as a CJNB VIP and enter the contest by indicating where their farm is located and providing their favourite harvest photo of 2020. They can also call 306-445-1050 for a chance to win their entry with Grant Schutte between 6 and 9 a.m.

Then, contestants can listen to CJNB’s morning show with Schutte to hear if their name is drawn, for a chance to have a Meal in the Field delivered for their farm crew.

All farmers are eligible to win.
