Mont St. Joseph Foundation raising funds to replace six bathtubs in annual celebration

The Mont St. Joseph Foundation held its 21st annual Grandparents Day Tub-A-Thon to raise money for the home.

This year’s goal was to raise enough money to purchase six new bathtubs which each cost $70,000.

This morning from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. many businesses and members of the public brought in their donations and pledge forms to help out. During that time there was an on-location live broadcast on the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group’s three stations Power 99, Beach Radio 101.5 and 900 CKBI.

Resource development coordinator with the Foundation, Jessica Gale told paNOW every piece of equipment has a shelf life and they started replacing the tubs approximately 12 years ago.

“The building itself is over 20 years old and these six (tubs) need to be replaced. They’ve reached kind of the end of their life,” Gale said. “It’s really important that we make sure that we provide the home with updated fully functioning proper equipment so that our residents and staff can both get the best benefits in the healthiest environment we can provide for them.”

The bathtubs needed are wheelchair accessible and Gale said a lot of their residents require these special access tubs. They also have an infection control feature to make sure they stay properly sanitized. In order to replace the bathtubs in all six neighbourhoods of the facility they will need approximately $420,000. Each neighbourhood has its own bathtub for that set of residents.

“It’s a lofty goal but we’re very optimistic,” she explained. “It was a really great morning. We had a lot of support from the community that showed up. Folks came from all over. We had folks from up North phoning in to make donations, we had folks from down South phoning in to make donations, the community support was astounding.

“It really makes you feel good about the work that you’re doing and know that other people value the good work our staff do here at the home.”

Usually this annual fundraiser is a Stroll-A-Thon where the residents join in on a long walk around the home. Unfortunately the group couldn’t do it because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year the residents were able to still participate in some ways outside on the deck, watch through the windows and listen in to the radiothon.
