Kidsport P.A. hosts COVID friendly bottle drive

Sep 8, 2020 | 5:29 PM

Normally when the words bottle drive are mentioned, the image of cute kids going door to door, ringing doorbells comes to mind, but due to COVID-19 that just can’t happen.

In an effort to think outside the box, KidSport Prince Albert is raising funds this week by inviting people to bring their bottles and cans down to a location outside TJ’s Pizza on 15th St. E.

Committee member Dwight Bergstrom said the group normally does all its fundraising in May during National KidSport month, but for obvious reasons, was forced to cancel.

“So we are kind of scrambling now to try and pick up the pieces with stuff that is COVID friendly,” he said.

Over the course of 22 hours, the group aims to fill two large waste disposal containers, generously provided by Greenland Waste. Bergstrom said when a number of sports programs were shut down last March, group members thought demand would ease off.

“But now indoor soccer is gonna go; hockey is gonna go; so now we are scrambling,” he said.

The bottle drive has been scheduled to run Tuesday until 8 p.m. and then again Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Bergstrom emphasized there is no limit to how many bags of bottles people bring down.

“The more the merrier,” he said.

As an added incentive both TJ’s Pizza and Propaganda have tossed in some door prizes.
