Ziglo returns to Ladies Lobstick winner’s circle, Fry caps off stunning season as runner up

A lot has been said about the strong mentor-pupil relationship that exists between Saskatoon golfer Kathy Ziglo and 15-year-old Brooklin Fry. And even when the two were battling it out in the closely contested finals of the 2020 Ladies Lobstick in Waskesiu, that didn’t change. Fry’s loudest supporter throughout the match was Ziglo herself, congratulating Fry each time she had a good shot.

But as warm as the relationship may be, there was still golf to be played.

“I love the kid, but I want to beat her,” Ziglo said after a chuckle.

The veteran golfer got her wish as she won her third Ladies Lobstick in her career, the most recent coming back in 2014. She beat Fry on the 17th hole to win the match play final.

That’s a revenge of sorts, after Fry was able to steal the 102nd Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championships July 21-23 in Warman on the final day to win the tournament.

But Ziglo didn’t have revenge on her mind, as much as she just wanted to have fun. Even after losing on 14, somebody asked Ziglo how she was doing in between holes. An enthusiastic ‘great!” was her response.

“It’s Waskesiu. We’re on the fifth day, the weather’s been great all week. There’s nothing to complain about, that’s for sure,” Ziglo said.

Fry can leave the tournament with her head held high. To get to the finals was an accomplishment in itself, as she had to defeat Kim Brown in the semifinals. Brown had won the last three Ladies Lobstick titles, and four out of the last five, so she’s no easy beat in any year.

And Fry was able to push Ziglo to the max throughout the match. She did have chances to win as well. Fry had a chance at a par on 15 to break the tie between the two golfers, but it lipped out to let Ziglo off the hook. Then Ziglo was able to finish off strong with a couple of solid pars, while Fry couldn’t get her putts to finish.

“That was one of my goals, to meet Kathy in the final. I was hoping to win, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it,” said Fry.

That final game on Friday will be the last round of the year for Fry, ending what was a special, eye-opening season. She won three provincial titles at three different age groups, the women’s amateur, Under-19 and Under-17. She’s also the first golfer since 2010 to win the provincial amateur and the Under-19 junior title in the same year.

“It was very successful. I was focusing on one shot at a time and not worrying about anybody else, focusing on my game. That works.”

Fry will now replace her golf clubs with her hockey stick and get ready for her first season with the Prince Albert Northern Bears in Saskatchewan Female U-18 AAA Hockey League action.

“I don’t know if she’s going to do hockey or golf in this life, but she has so much potential in golf. I just hope she goes,” Ziglo said.
