Wollaston Lake RCMP make significant alcohol seizure over two days

Aug 28, 2020 | 11:28 AM

Wollaston Lake RCMP in the province’s North have made significant alcohol seizures in several unrelated incidents over the last week.

The first seizure took place Aug. 22 when a local resident returned to the area on a private boat with liquor intended for resale in the community.

When officers waited for the suspect on shore, the boat doubled back and headed toward Jackpine Island. Officers later searched the island and located three bags full of 33 bottles of hard liquor. Officers also located evidence the alcohol belonged to a Wollaston Lake resident.

The resident was charged under the Saskatchewan Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act.

That same day, Mounties followed a private boat on Wollaston Lake. When it arrived on shore, officers searched the boat and located 12 bottles of hard liquor and over 60 bottles and cans of wine, beers and coolers.

The resident of Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation was charged under the Saskatchewan Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act.

On Aug. 23 RCMP searched a commercial barge that connects the local settlement on the easter side of the lake to Highway 905 on the western side of the lake. On the barge, police found eight bottles of hard liquor hidden in a package intended for delivery.

Two residents were charged and are scheduled to appear in court this November.

Police say this is the second weekend in a row where officers seized substantial amounts of alcohol intended for resale in dry communities.

Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation is a dry community located on each side of the Welcome Bay in Wollaston Lake. Its neighbour, the Wollaston Lake Settlement, is located between the two portions of the Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation, on the western shore of the Bay.
