City ponders need to add extra round of yard waste pick up

Aug 15, 2020 | 9:14 AM

Yard waste cleanup will be among the items on a future City Council agenda, and a recommendation that the city adds an extra round next year at a cost of $10,000.

According to a report discussed at last Monday’s executive committee meeting, the start of the 2020 yard waste pickup program saw a large surge of yard waste bags. One of the potential reasons cited was COVID-19 restrictions, which resulted in more residents staying home than usual.

“Regardless of the exact cause, the total number of yard waste bags collected during the first round of pickup was over three times greater than usual, requiring extra effort and more time to collect,” the report stated.

In an effort to help deal with the extra waste that accumulates between the time the snow melts and the beginning of the program in May, adminstration has asked council to consider adding one extra round of yard waste pick up.

“As many residents clean their yards for late May planting, the earlier pickup time will reduce the time for the accumulation of yard waste and should reduce the likelihood of delays in pickup,” the report said.

Mayor Greg Dionne inquired if a possible solution could be to just start earlier, rather adding the extra round.

In the end, a motion was passed by executive committee to include the discussion about the extra round in next year’s budget deliberations; however a final vote by council is still required.
