Council to discuss cannabis stores and residency policy for city employees at Monday’s meeting

With the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) set to eliminate the current cap on cannabis stores, most Prince Albert city councillors want to replace it with restrictions of their own.

The SLGA plans to remove the two cannabis store limit presently in place in Prince Albert in September.

At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors will discuss a new bylaw that would cap the number of cannabis stores in the city at three.

They’ll also consider approving a new store in the Cornerstone area. The retail location at 801 15th Street East would be the city’s third, and potentially final, cannabis store.

Also on the agenda is a proposed policy that would require some city employees to live within city boundaries.

If approved, new hires to senior management positions like city manager, department heads, and fire chief along with deputy and battalion fire chiefs would be required to move within city limits or face termination.

The residency policy would also apply to new hires to any permanent non-unionized city position.

Existing employees, police, and unionized employees (except senior management) would be exempt. Non-unionized employees in casual, term, or temporary positions would also not be subject to residency requirements.

Other highlights from Monday’s agenda include the final reading of a bylaw that would increase deposits for new utility accounts from $150 to $250 and a development permit for a new theatre and social club downtown.
