Program looks to help businesses cut down power use

SaskPower is looking to help small and medium sized businesses cut their energy consumption.

The Crown-owned utility is now offering its Walk-Through Energy Assessment Program to small and medium sized businesses with under 500 workers. The program provides those who qualify with an energy audit and advice on how to reduce power consumption.

The initiative was originally established in 2016, but recently there has been a new development.

“What’s different now is we’re partnering with Natural Resources Canada to provide this service for free,” SaskPower spokesperson Joel Cherry said.

According to SaskPower a typical assessment like the one they provide would normally cost between $3,000 and $7,000 depending on the size of the business. The program includes a walk through with an energy efficiency expert, who could make a range of recommendations on things, some of which the average person may overlook.

“[Something] might be using power without you even realizing it, that might be something our analysts could find and point out to you,” Cherry said.

Cherry said inspectors will also look at the building and make recommendations on what can be done to make it more energy efficient. He added these recommendations could also lead to businesses seeing savings on their natural gas bill.

“We take pretty holistic look at the place,” Cherry said.

There is no deadline to apply, but there are a limited number of spots available for those wanting to take part. Cherry said in offering this service they are aiming to accomplish a number of goals.

“If our customers are using less power, they’re paying less for it. It obviously translates into fewer greenhouse gas emissions in the long run, that’s true at an individual level or a business level,” he said.
