Lots of people making trip to P.A. National Park

Prince Albert National Park and Waskesiu have been busy places the past few weeks.

Randy Kershaw, who serves on the executive of the Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce, said a number of businesses in and around the townsite have been doing well recently.

“Hotels are at capacity, the marina is very, very busy, the beaches are busy, golf course is jammed and the mini golf is really busy as well,” he said.

Kershaw said he saw a lot of people from Saskatchewan coming to visit the park. He added the busy weeks that they have been seeing recently are a nice turn of events from what the outlook was back at the start of the summer.

“Back in you know April and May and early June things weren’t looking that promising. But once things started to loosen up, people wanted to stay in Saskatchewan and they’re checking out Waskesiu and the Prince Albert National Park,” he said.

Overall, Kershaw said the current number of people coming out is on par or slightly higher than what they would normally be seeing most years.

While many local businesses are doing well, Kershaw said the pandemic is still having an impact. He explained with the inability to have large events like weddings and reunions the local chamber is losing revenue due to the inability to rent out their hall.

“It’s going to hurt big time, but we’ll manage to get through it,” he said.

Prince Albert National Park is reminding those who come to visit to make sure to respect physical distancing. Since June 22 all the front country campgrounds are open and most back country campgrounds are also open along with most services. Group activities along with interpretive programs remain suspended.
