P.A. trailer courts receive water discontinuation notice

Jul 17, 2020 | 3:04 PM

Residents of two local trailer courts are concerned after receiving notice their water could be shut-off unless the City of Prince Albert and the parks’ B.C.-based owner can come to an agreement.

Driftwood Trailer Park and Eastview Trailer Park are located just outside the southern border of Prince Albert city limits, behind the Super 8 Hotel.

An official correspondence from the City of Prince Albert went out to residents on July 3 explaining the City had thus far been unable to agree to terms with the parks’ owner under which access to Prince Albert’s water supply and sanitary sewer system could continue.

City Manager Jim Toye told paNOW a 30-day shut off notice was issued to residents earlier this week.

“It comes as a last resort that we would give that notice,” Toye said. “But the notice has been given to them that if our current conflict with the owner isn’t settled then their water will be shut-off.”

Toye said after a period of no communication, since issuing the notice, the parks’ owner did reach out to the City and both sides have agreed to have further conversation on the matter by early next week.

“[Shutting-off the water] would be the very, very last thing we’d want to do so that’s why we want to have a discussion with him to get this worked out before that 30 days,” Toye said.

For his part, the parks’ on-site manager, Philip Chester, said management was caught off-guard by the city’s July 3 letter, sent directly to residents, which they didn’t learn of until July 15.

In an email to paNOW, he explained management had been waiting for the City to make contact with them since they last spoke in February, but assumed staff were busy because of the pandemic.

He continued in part:

“Upon becoming aware of the City’s letter, Driftwood and Eastview Trailer Parks’ management immediately reached out to the City and spoke with City Manager, Jim Toye, who has indicated the City is again willing to continue the ongoing discussions around getting a long term water and sewer servicing agreement in place for the residents of the Driftwood and Eastview Trailer Parks. We hope that the added attention this matter has received will not derail the extensive work put in by both the Driftwood and Eastview Trailer Parks’ management and the City, but will instead allow for renewed focus on the task at hand and spur us both on towards a cooperative resolution.”
