Shell Lake’s Brooklin Fry is the 2020 junior provincial golf champion, after a big win at Swift Current’s Elmwood Golf Club Thursday.

Fry won by a 10-shot margin over reigning champion Autumn Neiszner of Regina.

Fry also won the title in 2018 and this latest triumph secured her the U17 title as well.

She wrapped things up with a seven-over-par 54-hole total of 223.

The 15-year-old, who lives in Shell Lake and plays out of the Memorial Golf Club, told paNOW she’s maturing physically and mentally as a player.

“Working out and getting stronger really has helped me hit the ball farther and getting older I’ve started focusing more on every shot and take it more seriously,” she said.

Fry struggled in the high winds Tuesday and was cool with the putter, but got really hot Wednesday with a one-under-71 — a major milestone in her career so far.

“The second day I had a talk with myself and said ’OK you have to play good’ and then I shot one-under which is the best I’ve ever shot in a tournament,” she said.

That middle round was an eight-shot improvement on her first 18 holes and she followed up with a solid one-over-73 on the final day to clinch the title in style.

Fry’s next assignment is the Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championship in Warman next week and while she’s still developing as a young player, her arsenal off the tee will certainly keep getting her noticed.

“I out-drive most of the girls by quite a few yards and I think I can usually hit it 270/280 off the tee now,” she explained.

On the boy’s side of things Saskatoon’s Josh Nagy won the title, finishing eight shots clear of his nearest challenger on three-under-par 213.

Guillarmo Salazar out of the Waskesiu Golf club finished in fifth, 14 shots off the pace with an 11-over-par total of 227. Prince Albert’s TJ Baker, also a member at Waskesiu, was tenth at 14-over.
