WSA dealing with high water levels on Anglin Lake

The Water Security Agency (WSA) is working to deal with a situation at Anglin Lake.

Ron Podbielski, a spokesperson with the WSA said water levels on the lake are higher than what the body can accommodate.

“We are above the full supply level of the lake, which is 515.42 metres, so we’re about .15 of a metre above that,” he said.

The high-water levels are being caused in part by the regular rainfall which the Prince Albert area has been seeing along with water coming in from Alberta. Podbielski added the area also entered the spring and season with existing high levels of moisture.

To deal with the high-water levels on the lake Podbielski said the WSA will be removing stop logs from a reservoir on the lake to allow more water to flow downstream. He said by removing the logs the amount of water moving downstream is expected to almost double the amount of water flowing out.

“That’s typically how we try and manage high in flows,” Podbielski said.

With more water going downstream there could be localized flooding in some areas. Podbielski said areas around Spruce Home, parts of Highway 2 and Little Red River Park could see some problems in the near future.

“Likely in two to three days from now,” he said.

When it comes to the safety of the public the WSA is advising people to move property to higher ground where possible. Podbielski said people should also be careful when they are around water bodies as levels are high and water is moving swiftly.

For the levels to improve Podbielski said they need to see some change in the weather, specifically less rain.

“The best thing that could probably happen for the entire area is we get just a few days of dry weather that would allow us to manage the situation,” he said.
