Showers, Storms Persist

Scattered showers and storms to continue for much of the week

The unsettled weather will continue across the northeast for much of the remainder of the week.

Rain and thunderstorms were reported on Monday, with Greenwater Provincial Park experiencing some hail as well.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang told northeastNOW the potentially volatile conditions persist.

She said the low pressure system to the north is spinning around and sending a lot of moisture through the region.

“We’re seeing these showers [and] thundershowers. Some of them get a little more vigorous than others, meaning they’re producing hail,” Lang said.

The Melville and Yorkton area also saw some damaging wind over the last few days. Wind gusts in the northeast are expected to be in the 50 to 60 km/h range at times through Wednesday.

Conditions will improve later this week, but only briefly.

“It looks like we’ll get a bit of a break on Thursday, but we’re back into the unsettled weather for Friday and probably through the weekend as well,” Lang explained.

She said there could be a larger potential for severe weather on Friday, as temperatures climb.

June and July are generally the months with the most severe weather in Saskatchewan, Lang said, and the delayed spring could mean the severe weather season could extend a little more this year.

Lang explained why the prairies see significant severe weather events during the summer.

“We have a big contribution from growing crops,” Lang said. “They give a lot of moisture into the atmosphere and that’s one of those ingredients that we need for thunderstorms, so as long as those crops are growing and are not starting to dry, then we’ll keep getting these storms.”
