‘She was a free spirited and very loving girl’: Debden crash victim laid to rest

A funeral was held Monday afternoon on the Big River First Nation for a teenage girl struck last week by a car in the village of Debden.

In the early morning hours of July 7, 15-year-old Kaylan Keegan Lee Keenatch was walking on a road in the community near the arena. She was rushed to hospital with severe, life threatening injuries and died the following day while in care.

According to numerous Facebook posts, Keenatch was well loved.

One person wrote “you’ll always be in my heart.” Another person said “taken way too soon.”

A gofundme has been created to help Keenatch’s family with funeral expenses and other costs.

“She was a free spirited and very loving girl. She loved dancing, spending time with family and loved ones. Kaylan touched everyone’s heart in someway,” a statement on the page read, also indicating Keenatch was an organ donor.

“They have found successful donors for Kaylan. She has saved lives and is helping other families who are going through a tough time as well,” the statement said.

Last week, RCMP confirmed a 17-year-old boy was driving the car that hit Keenatch but there has been no word related to charges.

The investigation is ongoing by the Big River RCMP with the assistance of an RCMP Forensic Reconstructionist.
