Family provides update to bison on the loose in RM of Corman Park

The Osler Fire Department gave an update Tuesday morning from the family whose bison were set loose near Dalmeny.

The update followed the original post Sunday night, where the fire department said “numerous bison” had been let out of the Dalmeny farm.

On Tuesday, the family was able to speak about how serious the loss of the bison is.

“To say we are devastated and heartbroken as a family is an understatement,” the statement reads.

The family says at some point between Saturday night and Sunday morning, a trespasser clipped 13 wires of the fence the bison were kept in.

The farm had housed 52 bison, including 12 spring babies, four bulls and additional pregnant cows.

Since the bison were let out, the family has located and rounded up two groups in nearby areas.

Only six bison cows and a baby calf are actually back on the farm.

Two of the animals have died and four adults and one baby are still missing.

“Bison do not respond like regular cows, so herding and trailering them is a special feat only done by skilled bison farmers and special equipment,” the statement reads.

“They are now scared, exhausted, lost and some are hurt.”

The post says the bison are not pets to the family, but their life.

The family also took the time to thank everyone for the texts, meals, helpers trying to herd up the bison, and say they are overwhelmed by the “kindness and love” they’ve received.
