Spray parks, main pool at Kinsmen will open early July

Jun 25, 2020 | 10:39 AM

There’s good news coming for some Prince Albert outdoor facilities, with city officials happy to announce a number of reopenings.

In a media release, the City of P.A. said the main pool at the Kinsmen Water Park will open July 10, while July 2 is being targeted for the opening of spray parks. New restrictions will be in place in accordance with provincial guidelines.

Director of community services, Jody Boulet told paNOW it feels good to be able to offer more recreation options again.

“It’s nice to be on this end of the process,” said Boulet. “Back starting in the middle of March a lot of our focus unfortunately was on things that we couldn’t offer and facilities that we had to close, all for good reason.”

Little Red River Park will reopen Friday, June 26.

Main Pool at Kinsmen Water Park to Open July 10

The pool will only be available through group bookings. Boulet explained this will make it easier for to manage group size and also allow for equitable access to the facility.

Drop-in public swimming will not be permitted and access for groups must be coordinated through a single individual. Bookings will be taken only by calling the Water Park at 306-953-4835 starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7. The first day of operation will be Friday, July 10.

Due to restrictions, the water slides, hot tub and tot pool will not be available this summer.

Swimming lesson also not be offered this season.

“Just due to the guidelines it’s a little tough to respect the proper physical distancing when you’re offering swimming lessons,” said Boulet.

Bookings will be limited to up to 12 people for lane swimming and up to 45 people for the pool.

There are set times available with each time slot lasting 90 minutes. More information is available by calling the Water Park at 306-953-4835.

Spray parks target July 2 opening with staff supervision

City staff continue to prepare the seven spray parks for the season and if all components and systems are functioning properly after testing, July 2 is being targeted for reopening.

The only exception is the new Alfred’s Spray Park at Lions Park, where construction of the new components is expected to be completed later in July.

Admission is free for all spray parks.

The hours for all spray parks will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, including weekends. There will be a staff supervisor at the spray parks during these hours to make sure provincial regulations are adhered to.

These staff members are being re-deployed, as the Playground Program will not operate for 2020.

City spray parks are located at:

Crescent Acres – 1695 Olive Diefenbaker Drive
Kinsmen Park – 5 -22 Street West
*Lions Park (Alfred’s Spray Park) – 1301 13th Street West

Little Red River Park Re-Opens Friday, June 26th

Repairs to the roadway and other amenities in the core area of Little Red River Park are now complete and the park will reopen to the public, Friday, June 26 at 7 a.m. Damage was caused by flooding earlier this spring resulting in vehicle access from Highway 55 being closed.

Little Red River Park’s hours of operation will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Details on the re-opening of Cosmo Lodge will be available soon.

Preparations well underway

Despite the short timeline between the announcement and the opening dates, Boulet said preparations are moving forward in a very organized way. He explained while the department waited for dates and regulations from the province, they stayed in contact with staff so they could be quickly called back if needed.

“Although there was lots of uncertainty, we were planning behind the scenes and staying in contact with our staff in order to make sure we could roll it out on short notice,” he said. “We’re actually in a pretty good spot.”

A further update on spray parks as well as other facilities like the Alfred Jenkins Field House, Prince Albert Arts Centre, Museums and the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts will be available next week, the city said in a press release.
