Playground structure damaged by fire

A play structure in the city’s west end has been damaged by fire.

Members of the Prince Albert Fire Department were dispatched to the playground behind Westview Public School Tuesday afternoon after someone set the wood chips surrounding the structure on fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Alex Paul said these types of calls are not completely unheard of for firefighters.

“It is certainly something that we have seen in the past. We maybe get two or three calls per year, but it’s not something that I would say is routine,” he said.

When paNOW visited the playground Thursday morning, part of the structure was singed and there was a weak smell of smoke still in the air.

Paul said such incidents generally are not a major threat but can cause some major damage to the structures.

“In terms of fire spread, no there’s not really a great danger in terms of where it may go, but it can cause significant damage to the playground structure when you burn that plastic coating off the metal,” he said.

Paul said for the chips to burn they would have to be intentionally set. He added when they get called out to incidents like this it can be a difficult to find out who may be responsible.

“We get called to a fire and there’s no people around so it’s very difficult to determine who set the fire,” he said.

In an email to paNOW P.A. Police Public Relations and Media Coordinator Charlene Tebbutt confirmed officers were called to the area Tuesday afternoon. She said they are investigating, and no arrests have been made.
