For the second time in four months, a scheduled election at Montreal Lake Cree Nation has been postponed.

The date for the by-election has now been moved from July 31 to Sept. 30. According to a statement from Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Lawrence Lewis, the precaution was taken to ensure the continuity of health, welfare and security in the community, and was based on a recommendation from the elders executive advisory committee.

“Pursuant to section 16 of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation Election Act, 2016, the incument office of Chief (Frank J. Roberts) and off-reserve councilor councilor (Eldon Henderson) are recalled in the interim to lead alongside the elected candidates to ensure the continuity of governance, administration, and leadership of the community.”

The initial nomination meeting was also held last March and councillors Charmaine Ermine, Dallas Naytowhow, Cal Henderson, Dean Henderson, and Troy Naytowhow were all acclaimed.
