Canada Day at Candle Lake going virtual

Jun 24, 2020 | 2:00 PM

The annual Canada Day celebrations at Candle Lake will take on a much different look and feel this year.

Due to COVID-19, the parade and fireworks are cancelled. In their place, hundreds of homemade flags were distributed to residents, cabin owners and businesses. Mayor Borden Wasyluk said the community encourages everyone to sing the national anthem.

“On Canada Day, the plans are that everybody stands out on their deck and sings O Canada at 11 o’clock in the morning,” he said.

The organizing committee remains busy behind the scenes. Five-hundred smaller sized flags were made for community members/cabin owners to place in their yards and windows, and there were 100 larger sized flags made for for businesses and power poles. It took approximately 60 hours to make them all.

Residents who post a picture with their flag, and explain what they are doing to celebrate Canada Day in Candle Lake, can participate in a special photo contest.

Wasyluk said he’s disappointed the annual parade and fireworks could not take place. He said the event usually brought a lot of extra traffic to the community.

“Last year I would estimate it around 5,000, lined up on both sides of the highway, all the way from the [Ministry of Environment] grounds to the village hall,” he said.

Wasyluk said the resort village is also hoping to have a local fire truck do a loop through the subdivisions, waving a big flag and blaring its siren.
