Catholic school board gets preview of new online platform

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division is looking to improve communication between students, teachers and parents.

Starting in the next school year the division will launch a new online portal. The system aims to allow teachers to deliver lessons while keeping in touch with both parents and students.

Director of Education Lorel Trumier explained at a board meeting Monday evening, having a tool like this available is especially important now given the uncertainty of the pandemic’s future.

She added they anticipate a return to classrooms in the fall but said a good online platform could help in case of another lockdown.

“They’ll be times perhaps where we’re not able to because of [a] potential outbreak or potential concerns around being in a classroom,” she said.

Trumier said they also like having something like this available to help students who may be away and miss lessons. One example being when students have to travel for sports. Trumier described the system as being like a Facebook for education.

“The lesson is there, they can see that and then they can watch it over again as they need it,” she said.

The platform, which is called Edsby will be used by students from kindergarten to Grade 12. Trumier said there’s a dedicated spot on the site to post upcoming school events.

School board trustees got a sneak peak at the new system at Monday evening’s board meeting. Many expressed excitement about the possibilities it can offer.

Still waiting on guidelines for the fall

The division is still waiting to get further information from the province on a return to school preparedness plan for the fall. Divisions expect a framework document in the coming weeks.

“We’re still waiting for those guidelines,” Trumier said.
